Marriage Name Change in Florida

Agency: Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). Deadline: Within 30 days of your name change.

Florida law requires you to update your driver license name within 30 days of the change. The FLHSMV verifies your new name against the Social Security Administration's records, so you must complete the SSA step first. Visit a local tax collector or driver license service center with your documents.

Bring these documents:

• Updated Social Security card (reflecting your new name)
• Certified marriage certificate (original, raised seal)
• Current Florida driver license or ID card
• Two documents proving your Florida residential address (utility bill, mortgage statement, etc.)

If you need the full license record (including prior marriage history), request it specifically from the county.

Update Social Security first, then your Florida driver license — Florida agencies verify your new name against Social Security records, so going the other way causes rejections and wasted trips. Your U.S. passport is a separate, independent update: you do not need a new passport to get your license, and you can renew it whenever it suits your travel plans. Banks, employer, insurance, and the rest come after your license.
